Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hello, I’m Lisa Bevan, owner of Flower and Bulb.

I’m gardening obsessed. But it wasn’t always like that. I know how overwhelming it can be to find trustworthy, easy-to-understand, information on where to start your flower-growing journey. A few years ago, I found myself longing to have showstopping flowers to enjoy in my garden. But I wasn’t confident about achieving it.

I’d stare at beautiful floral displays in the garden centre or online and wonder: What flower bulbs can I plant now? Where do I grow them? How do I plant them? When do I plant them? What colours go well together? What do I do with bulbs after they've flowered? And what do those long Latin names mean? Gardening has always been a positive experience for me, though. So, fond memories like planting pansies with my grandfather at five years old, my mother’s peonies, the gift of a bonsai tree from my wonderfully eccentric friend Mavis, and sharing a crop of vegetables with my neighbour Brian, all spurred me on.

I gathered green-thumb tips from friends and family. Did my own research. Sought advice from horticultural experts. Spent many hours observing what other people were growing in their gardens and flower fields. And then threw myself wholeheartedly into it. I’ve since learned and tested what to grow. I understand which colour combinations work well. I’ve figured out which flowers support the insects and other wildlife that are so vital to our ecosystem. And I love using flowers in my home. Essentially, I discovered the endless joys of nurturing a beautiful natural space.

Then, in 2020, I lost my very dear grandfather and experienced a health scare at the same time. While recovering in my garden sanctuary, comforted by the nostalgia of gardening memories, the idea for Flower and Bulb suddenly came to me…I knew with absolute certainty that my mission is to use my accumulation of real-world know-how to encourage others to connect through gardening. To create memories with their friends and family. To enjoy connecting with nature. To create a safe space for anyone to ask questions. To be a catalyst for the continuation of gardening knowledge for all generations. And to provide flower lovers with the best possible quality seasonal flower bulb collections.

My goal is to demystify what goes into creating a flower-filled space without using any harmful substances. And be here to answer your questions. I want you to feel confident about getting out there and getting your hands dirty nurturing your garden (and your soul!). And, as for those long Latin plant names… I’m studying garden design at Capel Manor College where, among other things, I’m learning all about the history and etymology of flower names. So, now I can break those down for you too. I can’t wait to share all my gardening knowledge and experience with you on my Instagram page @flowerandbulb. And I look forward to hearing about yours!
